Rob Wohr, Winemaker and Owner, Explohr Wine Company

Rob is the winemaker and a co-founder at Explohr Wine Company and is a 2021 graduate of the Institute of Enology and Viticulture at Walla Walla Community College. The name for this wine label, Explohr Wine Company, signifies the direction of his brand. His focus is on a small 600-1000 case production exploring unusual grape varieties and winemaking styles for the Walla Walla Valley. Included in his upcoming lineup will be fresher, higher acid wines made for early consumption in a carbonic maceration/nouveau style. Gamay Noir, Nouveau of Gamay Noir, and a Rosé of Pinot Noir are his focus for the first vintage.

Growing up in New Jersey, where he had attended Rutgers University, Rob caught the wine bug when he moved to California in 2003 for a job with Old Navy. In Northern California, he was blown away by the Old Vine Zinfandel in the Dry Creek Valley. Eventually, a new corporate position at Eddie Bauer relocated Rob to Kirkland, Washington. Rob and his friends visited Walla Walla in 2018 on the hunt for a new wine region. It reminded him of the Sonoma County area, full of farmers, small wine producers, and a welcoming community. One month later, Rob and his partner John packed up their belongings and purchased a home, planting some roots in the area.

Walla Walla is also home to a nationally recognized enology and viticulture program. On the hunt for a hands-on wine program where he could jump in right away to harvest in the vineyard along with actually making the wine in the cellar, Rob enrolled in 2019 while also working a harvest at Va Piano Winery. Post-Harvest, Rob visited west to the Columbia Gorge. One winery and one wine, in particular, left an impression on him; Syncline Winery of Lyle, WA, and their Estate Grown Gamay. Eventually, in 2020, he worked a fulfilling harvest for James Mantone at Syncline. During this vintage, he became so inspired by the esoteric grapes and winemaking techniques that he started his label, Explohr Wine Company.

When speaking with Rob about wine, you’ll notice his excitement and energy when talking about wine. There is no snobbery, no judgment. Rob is a welcoming, inclusive, and charismatic winemaker. He enjoys the hospitality part of the wine industry and knows its value in selling wines. Why does Rob love winemaking? Simply put, he enjoys the diversity of the end product. A single region can produce many different expressions of the same grape variety in the glass.

When he is not working on his upcoming wine label, you can find Rob outside working on his ranch and at his wedding venue business Cold Creek Vintage Venue. He is an avid cook who improvises and goes off no recipes. He will craft a meal together off anything in the fridge. He and his partner John are avid cyclists, and you can find them driving miles around the Valley. When not in Walla Walla, his favorite place to travel is the Tuscan region, specifically Siena, but he will always have a soft spot for Northern California.

I can’t boast Rob’s know-how or palate, so I lend a hand with the creative side of Explohr: branding design and direction, social presence, and all that good stuff (if you receive a quirky email from us, chances are it was from me).  My path to the wine industry was as meandering as Rob’s:  after meeting Rob at Rutgers and graduating with a BA in Women’s Studies, we moved to the West Coast and never looked back. I’ll be cycling, swimming, bouldering, reading, writing, and daydreaming about skateboarding in my spare time.
